GEO MEMBRANE
A geomembrane is very low permeability synthetic polymeric membrane liner or barrier used with any geotechnical engineering related material so as to control fluid migration in a human-made project, structure or system. They are made of (un)reinforced polymeric materials which are used to stabilize earth & secure landfills ensuring containment of hazardous or municipal wastes and their leachates. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) geomembranes are effective and affordable options in reservoirs for water storage. The composite geomembrane is a kind of geosynthetics which made of more than two kinds of materials such as geotextiles (or fiber glass mesh), polymers (such as PE geomembrane, EVA geomembrane) and so on.
The main physical properties of geomembranes in the as- manufactured state are: Thickness – 60mil as standard (smooth sheet, textured, asperity height), Density, Melt flow index, Mass per unit area (weight), Vapor transmission (water and solvent) . HDPE geomembrane liner is the preferred product for lining projects. HDPE liner is resistant to many different solvents and are the most widely used geomembrane liner in the world. Although HDPE geomembrane is less flexible than LLDPE, it provides higher specific strength and can withstand higher temperatures. HDPE is known for its flexibility, chemical stability, and high strength-to-density ratio. HDPE offers a leak-free system via heat fusion joints. While PVC is stronger and stiffer material, it makes it suitable for direct burial and trenchless installation.

Trouble shooting guide
PROBLEM | POSSIBLE CAUSES | SOLUTIONS |
---|---|---|
BUBBLES IN THE SHEET | Material contains too much moisture | Increase pre-drying time |
Melt filter screen too coarse | Use fine mesh screen backed by a coarse screen | |
WRINKLES & CRACKS FORMATION UNDER PRESUSSRE | Air entrapment | Need to maintain perfect camber with uniform thickness & lay flat against a surface without any restraint. |
Poor lay flat properties | A geomembrane produced without camber will be less likely to wrinkle during installation than one with camber. Eliminating camber depends on the alignment and winding of geomembranes | |
DETERIORATION OF MEMBRANES AFTER EXPOSURE | Lack of crystallinity & poor ESCR properties | To add more UV & Premium Black MB to HDPE resin to prevent polymer degradation & heat ageing occurring due to solar radiation |
Lack of sufficient OIT ( oxidation induction time). | Addition of Antioxidant in the resin at proper level for heat stabilization facilitates long term sustenance & durability. |
